Sue E. Seid Inc.

[edit]

Sue E. Seid Inc. is an American pharmaceuticals and fabrics retailer with its headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. The company's founders were Susanne E. Seid and Albert R. Weinreb. The company originally manufactured webbing and military clothing for the United States Army during the Second World War. Following the aftermath of the war and into the 1950s, the company had changed its name from Sue E. Seid - Heavy Duty Ropes and Cyanide Pill Manufacturing Company to Sue E. Seid Inc. as its consumer demand largely increased. Throughout the late 1940's and into the 1950's, the company focused more on selling pharmaceuticals and drugs rather than fabrics. It became a commercial phenomenon prior to the 1950's as millions of consumers began buying its products nationally. In the 1980's the company gained mass commercial fame and (alongside names like McDonalds, Apple and Coca Cola) became part of the face of America's corporate prowess.

History

[edit]

Sue E. Seid started only as a small local town pharmacy in Missouri in 1933 under the name Weinreb's Pharmacy. The pharmacy was owned by newly wed entrepreneurs Albert R. Weinreb and Susanne E. Reid. Selling only medicines, pills and other pharmaceutical drugs, the company became famous within the city. Only later in 1939 was the company established as Sue E. Seid - Heavy Duty Ropes and Cyanide Pill Manufacturing Company.

In 1938, recovering from debt due to issues affecting the company (mostly due to the Great Depression), Weinreb and Seid sold the pharmacy and bought a 55,000,000-square-foot underground cave in the bluffs above the Missouri River, now commonly referred to as SubTropolis, in Kansas City, MO. The shafts were used to build large underground factories to manufacture cyanide pills for consumer use. However, the limited workers resulted in no attention from the public. So, the couple gambled their way into investing a larger mine, in order to build more factories and workplaces, employing more workers and supplying more goods to consumers as the years progressed. were tired of the small shop and decided to make a change to their company for the better.
